The Pond of Izhevsk is its crucial semantic piece that promises spatial unity for all the disjointed fragments of urban, industrial, suburban and natural environments around it. It is a yet undiscovered locus of synthesis to alleviate the city’s contradictions, a unified conceptual framework to embrace all of its directions, moods and initiatives.
The waterfront is a natural sequence of spatial and functional realms, each a unique link in the chain of the city’s extensive internal facade, with all the districts and quarters of the city gathered together for a dialogue.
The Pond and its banks are a crowning centrepiece of the rich green and aquatic network of Izhevsk. This makes sure that here at least the fundamental conflict of city versus nature is resolved. The urban is no longer hostile to the sylvan and the green wedge of the Koltoma forest doesn’t really end even at the Dam and the Izhevsk Plant itself.
Reinforcement of the existing accented points of the waterfront is to be the the initial phase of development. The Plage, the Youth Palace, the Esplanade, the Brewery and the Izhevsk Plant are to become the natural foci of growth and synergetic vibrancy that will secure the truly central role of the waterfront within the urban organism.
